Co-Creating a Better Way of Life: Herding Cats Collective Home

Welcome to Herding Cats Collective Home - a one-of-a-kind intentional community located in Calgary, where we co-create a space that nurtures, protects, and empowers visionary leaders to contribute to a positive impact towards a socially just, environmentally sustainable, and spiritually fulfilling world. We have capacity for a total of eight people, currently there are five people and two cats sharing the spaces of our urban home. We are seeking individuals, families with children, or couples to rent one or both available rooms.

Please note that there is a process for joining the community as a resident. Read on for more information.

We currently have two furnished private rooms on the main floor available in our urban home. They can be rented together. These prices are for single occupancy, and prices are negotiable to share a room. Both have hardwood floors and large closets. The first room ($850) is a master bedroom at the front of the house with a queen bed. The room features a large window, is filled with natural light, and offers a view of the pine trees in front of the property. The second room ($750) is quaint and furnished with a double bed and a desk. There is functional storage in the storage room, in the secured garage [including a spot for your bicycle] and in the common space.

Prices include fibre optic fast internet, bedding, towels, common-use items such as soap detergent, and cleaning supplies, snacks like popcorn, cooking oils and spices, toilet paper, money to share for other common purchases, and funds for a game we play together periodically to decide on other shared items and project materials.

When you move in, you'll be enjoying a ****whole property featuring a fenced backyard, front and back shared gardens, two bathrooms, one living room, one common study room, one fireplace room, four fridges, a flex room and a wood workshop. Our kitchen is equipped with a granite countertop, fast and precise induction stove, a dishwasher, a Vitamix blender, a quality mastication juicer, a Berkey Water Filter, and an air fryer and more, to meet all your culinary needs.

At Herding Cats Collective Home, you'll enjoy the best of both worlds - the convenience of city living with easy access to public transportation, and the tranquility of a peaceful neighbourhood. Our location boasts a bus stop right in front of the home and immediate access to bike lines to downtown. Whether you're headed to the city centre, SAIT, or University of Calgary (U of C), you'll be just a short bike ride away. And, if you're looking for a serene escape, we're just a 5-minute walk to a bluff that overlooks the city and the beautiful Confederation Park.

What sets Herding Cats Collective Home apart from a traditional living arrangement? We are a community of like-minded individuals who have chosen to live together in alignment with our shared values. We are part of an adventure. We use Sociocracy and Non-Violent Communication to make decisions and communicate effectively, fostering deeper connections and a stronger sense of community. We benefit from receiving cooking for most night of the week, and we cook for the others one day of the week. We have a common garden, shared workshops, and opportunities for car and electric bicycle sharing. We also have a common money system, and regular workshops and activities to promote personal growth and learning. Demographically, we welcome all ages, and are currently multi-generational. We are also entrepreneur-friendly, with all of us actively engaged in various projects and businesses.

In addition to our shared values and commitment to co-creating a better way of life, there are certain requirements and desired characteristics for living at Herding Cats Collective Home. We are looking for individuals who have a deep interest in cooperation, whether it be through employee-owned businesses, intentional communities, or ecovillages. Maturity and a strong work ethic are essential, as is the ability to contribute to the development and maintenance of the cooperative energy and take care of your own emotional needs in a way that balances giving and receiving. We welcome vegans, and have a policy regarding drug and alcohol use. Additionally, we ask that residents participate in weekly chores and work parties, and we prefer that residents contribute to the shared garden and harvest, engage in meditation and sharing circles, and offer workshops and services to the community.

Beyond our current rental opportunities, we are also interested in co-creating an urban ecovillage model with others. Whether through co-owning this property with us, renting or buying nearby, or starting an intentional community development club, we welcome those who are interested in joining us on this life-long journey towards a more sustainable and fulfilling way of life. If this resonates with you, please don't hesitate to reach out.

At Herding Cats Collective Home, we're always looking for ways to enhance the community experience for ourselves. Next year, we aim to offer even more workshops and ongoing practices to help foster personal growth and connection. We aim to be offering workshops on healing practices, compassionate communication, ecstatic dance, meditation, and yoga. Additionally, we aim to have workshops on unschooling, permaculture, and how to join others in building a more sustainable and healed world. We're also working on implementing a common grocery bill to encourage healthy eating habits and cost savings for us residents.
