Oaklands Community Overview

Oaklands is an attractive and affordable family neighbourhood in Victoria.

Originally a heavily forested area, street trees are still important to the neighbourhood with its many chestnuts, Garry oaks and flowering fruit trees. After World War One, London Plane trees were planted along Shelbourne Street as a memorial to local soldiers and still grace the street today.

Oaklands is home to Hillside Mall, a major shopping centre for the region. The mall, along with surrounding commercial uses, medical and dental offices, restaurants and neighbourhood convenience stores, form a vital commercial core which is served by high volume traffic and transit routes of Hillside Avenue, Shelbourne and Cook Streets. The community is also home to a growing neighbourhood village, known as Haultain Corners.

Residents enjoy a great deal of parkland in a variety of city parks. Oaklands Elementary School, originally opened in 1913, continues in its role providing education to young children and serving as a resource to local community groups. The landmark Cridge Centre for the Family, BC's oldest registered non-profit society, is located in Oaklands.

Oaklands has other heritage features including a number of residences and structures and the Jewish Cemetery which was established in 1860 and sits atop Fernwood Hill.
